PERUBAHAN IKLIM DAN KEMAMPUAN RUMAH TANGGA PETANI SAWAH TADAH HUJAN DALAM PEMENUHAN KEBUTUHAN PANGAN DI KENAGARIAN SIMAWANG KABUPATEN TANAH DATAR

Abstract

This paper presents the result of study on the ability of rainfed paddy farmer household in fulfilling their food needs in one small village (Nagari Simawang), sub district of Rambatan west Sumatra, Indonesia.
The fact of climate change is not an issue anymore, and agricultural sector is one of sectors that get its direct impact. Climate change could affect the continuity of agriculture, as well as farmer’s welfare. At the same time welfare has a closely correlation with food security. In the research site, for almost 10 years, the rainfed paddy field could not be cultivated anymore, due to the unavailability of water as an affect of the uncertainty of rainfall pattern. This condition could affect the farmer household’s availability of food, as well as their food security. Generally, the study finds that the drought in the research site did not significantly affect the availability of food and the households’ food security. However, the accessibility of food shifts from direct access to indirect access, since the farmers no longer could produce their own food. Furthermore, the farmers have already performed adaptation strategies toward their unfortunate condition. These strategies keep them having enough food for their family. Despite the climate change causes the lower income (32%) for the farmers, it is not totally affect the food security of the farmer household.
