PROSPEK PENGEMBANGAN PISANG DI SUMATERA BARAT

Abstract


This study aims to (1) examine the expansion of banana market by looking at the trend of consumption, export and production in 10 years, (2) identify what type of banana has the highest level of productivity, (3) examine what kind of technology can be used to inrease the banana productivity, (4) look at production facilities in every banana production center, (5) identify whether there is incentive for the farmers, (6) identify transportation facilities and (7) examine the banana market competitiveness in West Sumatra. The study result shows that the average growth of banana production annually in West Sumatra is 3,438.7 tones, while the growth of banana consumption and export per year is 2,074 tones. It is found that there is an excess supplay of banana in West Sumatera. This condition leads to an oppurtunity to expand banana market and banana price also increase significantly. It can be seen by the increasing of demand for banana from Pekanbaru and Jakarta. Moreover, most of the farmers have little knowledge on how to manage banana plantation. Production facilities are already available, and it is supported by transportation facilities. In fact, farmers gain enough profit from banana enterprise.
